Illusions of Quake

Posted in Movies, Quake, San Jose on August 18th, 2006

I was looking online the other day, and randomly found this. It just came out today, but I’ve been so out of the loop on movies and such this summer that I never heard about it. I emailed out to the group, and got a decent number of bites, so we decided that we would see it tonight. Funny thing though, even though it was a nationwide release, it wasn’t playing at the huge multiplex near us. Instead, it was playing at 10:00 PM at the CineArts on Santana Row.

Since we had an hour and a half to kill after dinner, we stuck around and played some good old fashioned Threewave Quake. The game of choice was CaptureStrike, and it actually turned out alright. We had five people playing, and (keeping in mind I have literally thousands of playing hours now) the opposing team to me actually came close once.

After Quake, we met Fred and headed to the theatre. It’s quite shocking how packed Santana Row is at times. There are a few nice places there, but I think it’s the complete lack of other destinations in San Jose that keep the place hopping. We eventually found a parking spot at the very top of a parking garage, then swam through the crowds to get to the movie.

I won’t bore you with a review or a long, drawn-out critique, I’ll just tell you that I thought the movie was good. Very different from other roles that Edward Norton has done, but it still turned out well. The story was very interesting, even though it was a drama/romance (though mostly drama).

Slept in, Rocket Arena, Superman Returns

I actually slept in this morning! I woke up around seven, realized that I wasn’t going to the gym this morning, then went right back to sleep for two hours, and hory crap did it feel good. Of course though, as soon as I woke up, I had to go to the bathroom really bad, and my roommate was in the shower (now I remember why I wanted a place with two bathrooms). After dinner at work, I got a Rocket Arena server going at work. I have a really bad feeling that it’s going to lead to some unproductive nights, but oh well, gotta take a night off every now and then, don’t you? I got five other people to play, they were all new to Q3A, but it was still a lot of fun, can’t wait to get threewave going!

Eight of us went to go see Superman Returns at 9:15. I don’t know what the heck everyone was complaining about. I thought it was a decent movie. And for any one bitching about plotholes, HOW BOUT THE FACT THAT HE CAN FLY?! It’s a science fiction movie, you have to learn to accept plotholes people, I mean, c’mon. Now, on that same note, I’m not saying the movie was excellent, it had some fairly shoddy CG and the dialog was lacking in some cases, but it was very enjoyable to watch.
