The Nature of Naps

Posted in Concerts, Food, Google, Mountain View, Movies on July 1st, 2007

Have you ever had a truly great power nap? The kind where, when you get up afterwards, you are almost instantly refreshed and un-groggified. have you ever noticed that those naps are never long in length? I discovered something this year in school. I tried taking naps of varying lengths. The ones that worked best for me were the ones where I would lay down for thirty minutes at most. Even if I didn’t fall asleep, I at least would shut my eyes and let my body relax. It sounds crazy I know, but it’s true. When I was out for an extended perior of time (forty-five minutes or more), I would wake up extremely groggy, sometimes even more tired than I was prior to napping. I’ve heard all sorts of theories on this, but so far none of them I truly buy. Anyone got any good ones out there to explain this phenomenon? I should also say that I am primarily a six-to-eight hours a night sleeper, and (during school anyways) I work out five hours a day.

Speaking of theories, I have one for Mondays at Google. I believe that most of the guys in the locker room on Mondays are all gung-ho from a good night’s sleep, and thus get to the gym slightly earlier than usual. Where as I, sticking to my routine as always, get there at the same time. Thus, the lines in the shower that seem to form only on Mondays, are explained. For lunch, Andrew, Inga, Ilya and I went to Euro. It was alright, but I don’t think we’ll be going back anytime soon. I got back, worked for a bit, then went to a status meeting. I left a bit early to catch the bus to the Giants game. Of course, being the early birds that we are, we all got on the wrong bus. The shuttle which we boarded was being reserved for a handicapped intern, and thus we sat around and watched five other full shuttles depart. After fifteen minutes, we got off the shuttle and switched to another one. After a long drive, we got to the stadium right on time. We found our seats right as the first pitch was thrown. We did lots of fun things while at the game. Most of our activities involved watching other (mostly drunk) people make asses of themselves. We left in the ninth inning and headed for the shuttle stop. Luckily, other interns had done the same, so the shuttle was full enough that we could leave right away. Rachel gave Andrew and I a ride to my car, then I gave Andrew a ride home. I ended up getting home at 2315. I went to bed, but didn’t fall asleep unil roughly midnight.

On Tuesday, Andrew, Inga, and I went to lunch at Pintxo. It served great food, but it was tapas style, so I ended up with ten plates on a tray for something that could have easily been held on a single plate. After lunch, I finished my research presentation material. I went to dinner at Charlie’s with Rachel, Katie, Andrew, Marlena, Marlena’s sisten Monika, Sam, and Nathan. After dinner, I went back to my building and played DDR for thirty minutes, then went home and convinced Ciderman to come over for some South Park.

Wednesday, Daniel and I went to Oasis for lunch. It was great! They had a salad bar very similar to Pluto’s! After lunch, I worked for a bit, then left to pick up Sara from the Caltrain station at 1630. I dropped her off at my place, then went to Charlies with Daniel and Andrew. After dinner, Sara and I went to get a copy of the apartment key made, then came back home and just watched South Park.

Chris Cameron came up to Google for lunch on Thursday. It was nice seeing him again, I hadn’t hung out with him since last summer right before he left to go back to school. For dinner, I went to Charlie’s with Rachel, Marlena, Monika, and Jack. I don’t know where Andrew was, but he never ended up arriving. I left for home and watched some of the NBA draft… Poor Nick, he slipped into the second round. I feel bad for him, he stayed in school all four years and played really well, I just don’t know if he’s meant for the NBA. Dallas took him though, so maybe they’ll throw some more weight on him and get him in prime condition to play backup for Nowitski. Oh, and Ramon Sessions almost didn’t get picked. He went at the end of the second round to the Milwaukee Bucks. Luckily, they are having point guard issues, so he might actually get to play soon. For some reason, I was really tired, so I ended up going to sleep at 2130.

I finally arranged a tennis match. I met up with another intern to play at 0700 on Friday morning. However, twenty minutes into playing, he broke not only his strings, but his racquet as well. Lunch was uneventful, but I had a meeting afterwards at 1410. I almost fell asleep in the meeting, so I had to excuse myself about half way through to go take a quick walk and wake myself up. Anyways, after TGIF, I headed home to get Shakeh and Sara. I called Dan, and the four of us headed to Palo Alto to go to The Cheesecake Factory. We only had a ten minute wait, which is just unheard of. To kill the time, Sara fed her addiction while Dan, Shakeh, and I went to the Apple Store. It was the debut day of the iPhone, and there was actually a line just go get into the store. The line went really quick though, but we still didn’t bother going in. We walked back to the restaurant, then got seated and enjoyed our dinner. We got home and watched some more South Park before going to sleep.

Shakeh, Sara, and I got up and got ready to go out for the day. We headed to Google and got there around saturday: got up, got ready, and went to Google. I gave Sara and Shakeh a tour of the place, which included the massage chair, bouncy balls, and plenty of free drinks/food.

After finishing at Google, we went to pick Dan up, then headed to Half Moon Bay. The drive there was really pretty, though backed up with traffic. We walked down main street for a bit, then headed back to the car and to a restaurant to get food. After we were done eating, Dan headed back to Davis and Sara, Shakeh, and I headed back to my place at Mountain View to rest for a bit.

After taking a nap, we watched an episode of Planet Earth, then headed to the movies to see Evan Almighty. It was surprisingly good. It was virtually nothing like Bruce Almighty, but still very good. After the movie, we went to Chipotle and got burritos, then headed home, ate, watched more South Park, then went to sleep.

I got up at 0715 on Sunday to do laundry. Shakeh went with me. While doing laundry, we played pool, Marble Madness, and Shakeh used the massage chair. I learned how to use the espresso machine too! I of course didn’t have any, but Shakeh did. After the laundry was finished, I went back home, waited for people to show up, then headed out to the Warped Tour. The official roster was me, Ray, Fa’y, Ciderman, Justin, and Sara. Melli and Matthias met up with us later, around 1700. We saw a ton of good bands, including Tiger Army, Bad Religion, The Vandals, Yellowcard, Anberlin, Pennywise, the Circle Jerks, Killswitch Engage, New Found Glory, and a few lesser know bands. We got done around 2100, headed back to Google to rehydrate, then went home and called it a night.
