Playing God

Strings of blood
Strings of wool
Strings of gold
Your strings I’ll pull

Burned by fire
Refreshed by rain
My presense brings you joy
The truth brings you pain

Pulling your strings
Our beings so close
But never will they touch
Our feelings forever unexposed

Though your strings I can pull
Your soul I may draw near
You are still your own person
Filled with passion and fear

Pulling your strings
I draw you in
You resisting the tug
Prolonging the sin

Tired you grow
Your resolve slowly lost
You fall into me
Not understanding the cost

Pulling your strings
My error shines clear
Your presence is loved
Your warmth so near

But nothing can happen
No ounce of happiness gained
When one’s soul
Is so plagued with pain

Pulling your strings
Then letting them go
You slip away from me
I’m worse than before

Monday was cool, I had my official Google interview. I think I nailed the first part, but the second part was hard to gauge. After the interview I took a nap and worked some more. I met with Staadt in the afternoon just to give him a status update on my projects.

Tuesday I tried to get a bunch of people together for dinner, but my anti-social crew would have none of it. Instead, Rachel and I ended up going out to Bistro 33 for dinner, predecessed by Little Prague for a quick drink. After dinner, Rachel, Justin, and I went to Baskin Robbins for dollar scoop night, w00t! Rachel had to go, but we met Meike and Alice there.

Wednesday I headed back to Reno. I got in around 15:30 and proceeded straight to the racquetball courts at Lombardi. I played Mike, but he was too tired to move, so after that I played Joe, then Sebastian’s friend Chris, then Sebastian, working them all in turn ; ) After some rest we went to Silver Peak, meeting Brian and Bei there as well.

Thursday was Turkey Day as usual. Pictures are up in the usual spot.

Friday I got my haircut, then met up with the cousins to go see the fountain. I actually really liked it, but I have a feeling a lot of people either won’t get it or won’t like it, they’re problem though, not mine.

Saturday I went to the market and the first hour of the football game with Meike, Alice, Anguela, and Sara. After that, Chiara, Sara, Meike, Alice, and I went to Arden. We ended up shopping from 15:30 to 20:30, then going to the Cheesecake Factory and not getting back until 22:45.

Sunday I didn’t do much, just some laundry, groceries, a nice two hour nap, and dinner at Pluto’s with Meike and Alice.

Our Infinite Struggle

Life never ceases to test you. Everyone has their own unique challenges, but they all are difficult. One might find themselves confronted with issues at work, in their personal life, or in their social life. The choices are hard, the consequences heavy. And to make things worse, the decisions we make in life (no, they don’t always echo an eternity…) will always affect others. If that wasn’t enough pressure, add the fact that the most noble and self-sacrificing act can, and will, be misinterpreted as hurtful by some, and you can never please everyone. Despite all this though, we must continue to prevail, to meet these challenges head on, or what little good we can do will forever be lost, and the life we lead will be pointless.

Let’s see now, Monday was just a nice night of watching Heroes. I was able to get to bed at a decent time, though that also means I didn’t really do much besides sit around and watch TV.

Tuesday was a lot of fun. My mom, Vicki, and Sinead came to town for dinner. They went to Arco to see a concert, so I convinced them to get food from Davis instead of Sac. After hanging out with them at Pluto’s, I went to Fuzio’s with some friends. We ate dinner, then wandered over to Baskin Robbin’s for ice cream.
Wednesday ushered in weekly GI meeting. Meike came over and we cooked dinner (and an enormous quantity of leftovers). She hung around for awhile, we watched some basketball, then I rode with her back to her place.

Thursday was the usual VR-lab meeting. After the meeting, a bunch of us went to Woodstock’s for free pizza from the GSA. Just like last time, there was a mad dash for food whenever it came out. I went to go play racquetball with Rachel afterwards. She’s definitely getting better. We got kicked off the court (luckily right in time, as I had to bail anyways). I went home, showered, then went out to The Graduate with Sara for Salsa lessons. What happens though? A Kings’ game is on, so there were no lessons, only dancing. Of course, neither of us have any idea what we’re doing, so we just hung out, had a drink, watched other people dance, then took off to Delta of Venus for awhile.

Friday I played more racquetball with Rachel, this time not getting kicked off the court. Afterwards, I went home, showered up, then worked for awhile. I went over to Dani’s to watch a movie, but as it would turn out, the rest of the people there wanted to go to Sac to watch something, so I passed. Rachel and I ended up going to see The Prestige (which I would highly recommend). Dan Coming ended up joining us, and we ran into Luis and Chiara as well.

Saturday was mad, crazy, psycho busy. Well, not really, but I had virtually no time for work. It started with sitting in front of my computer (not) working for three hours. I then headed out with Robert to stand in line for student tickets for the Causeway Classic. After we got our tickets, we went to the Farmer’s Market so I could get a Hot Dog. Robert needed some caffeine, so we went to Starbucks, and I wanted some fruity goodness, so we headed to Jamba Juice. We walked back to the game, met up with Jeff, Dan, and “Ze Gehmuns.” The game was alright, Davis won, but not in a convincing fashion. I think I would rather have watched the OSU-Michigan game, but oh well. After the game, I went to the I-House to help out a little, then walked around with Justin while waiting for the doors to officially open. We got in, then had a typical Thanksgiving Dinner, meaning we all ate way too much turkey, mashed potatoes, and pie. After dinner, Brian, Tony, and I headed to Wal-mart to try and get a Wii. Apparently they lied to Tony, he had called three times in the previous two days, and they told him they would NOT be handing out claim tickets, one would simply have to stand in line. Of course… they lied. We got there at 20:00, and they apparently handed out tickets at 08:45. As if that wasn’t disappointment enough, we went to Cattlemen’s for dinner (well, Tony and Brian went for dinner, I went for the heck of it), the service was terrible and the food wasn’t that great. Just a general disappointment of a night (besides the Club International dinner of course).

Sunday was a lazy day. I worked almost the entire day, besides a two-hour stint of football at the fields with Dani.

Siempre Loco

I know Reno is a desert, but geez is the climate bipolar. I still remember one day about ten years ago when I was wearing shorts and working in my backyard, it was probably a nice twenty-five degress outside. Two hours later, the temperature plummets to a few degrees above zero and it starts snowing! A similar thing just happened to me again. I’m in Reno, the weather is a bit chilly, but nothing extreme. I check the weather in the morning and all of a sudden I see snow forecasted for the next thirty-six hours! ARGH!!! But anyways, onto the weekly recap:

Monday I watched Rachel’s football team’s final game. They did alright, but were outdone unfortunately. I got a few pictures and some videos, though not much is really worth showing. Here are some of the better ones.

Tuesday rang in a lot of frisbee, YAY! I also had my VR lab meeting early in the week (and early in time, 14:00). Dan and I had to readjust some of the projects to get a single eye working on the wall. It took enough time that I ended up staying for the talk by Michael Garland. The talk was about quadrangulating meshes, and it was (for some strange reason) hosted by the math department. The talk was interesting though, and afterwards Dan, Sung, and I went to the MU to play pool. We did that for an hour or so, then Dan and I went to grab dinner before I went to a poetry reading. As it would turn out, Chiara, Sunny, and Sara also showed up, and Grinil was one of the hosts. The event turned out to be a lot of fun, and Dan ended up staying for the entire thing. Afterwards, I rode back a bit with Sunny, then finished the trek home and went to sleep.

I learned the difference between checking and picking in Lacrosse on Wednesday. And I also learned that people need to calm the heck down sometimes. Oh well, nothing too bad happened, so it isn’t a big deal. We had a late GI meeting today, and now that G80 has finally launched, I don’t have to be so careful about details I mention. I caught up with Brothers & Sisters, and if it was already obvious, yes I’m addicted. Did you catch the election results? I’m suddenly reminded of a line from Liar Liar, “The pen is blue… the god damn pen is blue…” And to that, all I have to say is hw00t!!!1! After the GI meeting Tony, Sung, Shubho, Brian, Meike, and I went to some faculty awards ceremony in Kemper. Props to Professor Owens for telling us where to snag the free food and al-key-hol. I would also like to take this time to say that MPI needs some good examples online, like how to create a new communicator.

Thursday in Davis was alright, I was having a bad frisbee day, so I wasn’t too upset that I had to leave early to catch the talk by James O’Brien. Something about him though, I thought he would be both tall and imposing, when in reality he’s maybe 1.75 meters. His talk was good though, lots of cool examples done by his grad students. After his talk I hurried home, packed up, and drove to Reno. Sebastian and I went to go see Anberlin in concert. We had to endure through two other crappy emo bands, but it was worth it. Anberlin was good, and they were freaking awesome in comparison to the previous bands. I ended up running into Jason Stern, and old friend from IGT, while at the concert. He’s now working full-time at IGT.

After the concert, a ton of us went to the Little Waldorf Saloon to get some drinks and hang out. It was five and seven dollar pitcher night, so after we did a round of Irish Car Bombs, shout out to Carl and Sean by the way ; ), some of the guys just ordered themselves pitchers of beer, like Fat Tire (another shout out to you Carl). Bei wanted to be able to drive home, so we (as in a bunch of us) ended up going back to her place to have some more drinks so she could get socially lubricated (and then some).

The roll call for Bei’s place was me, Bei, Nick, Sebastian, Penick, Smith, Stanhope, Alicia, Tunya, and Peter. The night was really fun, if you want the details you can always inquire to me personally ; ) Here’s some photographic evidence for those interested.

Friday wasn’t too terribly exciting. I had brunch with the folks and dinner with them, Mike, Bei, Nick, and Sebastian. After dinner, Bei and I went to a Nevada basketball game (GO PACK!). After the game (the pack won of course), Bei and I got some Cold Stone, then went back to my place. We were both tired, and Brian’s flight got delayed until after midnight, so we just crashed on my parent’s very comfortable sectional until Bei had to leave to pick up her hubby.

Remember what I said about the weather? That’s why I had to leave Reno so early. Well, that and I had a bunch of work I had to get done. I got in around 11:00, and ended up going to lunch with Dan and Meike around 13:30. After lunch, Meike and I walked around downtown until 15:30 or so, then we went home. I made half of the ClubI Thanksgiving flyer while watching Kansas State beat the Longhorns (HA! Take that you Trojan killing bitches!). Saturday was also Brian’s birthday, so we met a bunch of people at Ben & Jerry’s for ice cream. Everyone else ran off to go see BORAT! while I went to Sophia’s with Cathy. We played “Liar’s Die” for awhile, and ended up meeting the owner of Crepeville (it’s a chain… never woulda thought…). I dropped Cathy off and got to sleep around 01:00.

I didn’t get a lot of sleep Sunday morning. I woke up around 08:00 for no reason, so I just decided to get up and work. I took a break around 14:00 and went shopping at the Co-op and Safeway. Sara emailed me around 16:00 with a computer problem. I went over to her place for awhle trying to help her. Turns out her problem wasn’t an easy fix. We then went out to dinner at Crepeville with Sunny and Chiara. Somehow I ended up staying there until 22:15, then I had to go home to get my car and pick up Rachel. Right as I was about to leave I checked the flight status, and for some reason, it wasn’t scheduled to get in until 23:30. I waited around for a little while longer, then took off. I didn’t end up getting home until 00:30, hence why I didn’t get to sleep until 01:00!

Some things in life just aren’t meant to be. A Tower Records in downtown Davis, long-term relationships while in grad school, ice cream in front of me, and the list goes on. What’s even worse is when things can’t even start. One of the unfortunate problems of being in the company of international students is that any relationship you have with them is temporary by requisite. It’s an unfortunate (or… inconvenient = p) truth, and it prevents something that could be really good from happening.

Monday was largely uneventful, except for Rachel’s football game. Her team tied this time, two-to-two, though it was a really good game. Her team is getting good really fast, primarily because everyone on her team is great, they just never played with each other before the start of intramural play. One of her teammates corner kicked a goal, it was awesome. Check out the video if you want.

Tuesday… what went down Tuesday… I know racquetball and ultimate frisbee were fun. Tony is being troublesome with racquetball though. He says he isn’t playing his best because he’s bored, yet I don’t see a way to enjoy the game to its fullest unless you give it your all. At night, I went over to Meike’s place and we carved pumpkins with her roommates, that was a lot of fun.
Wednesday I didn’t do much, just had the weekly meetings. Volleyball is gaining in fun every day, and badminton is getting good too.

Thursday was busy. I had my usual workout and racquetball. Ultimate frisbee got rained out, so Amy, Andrea, Thomas, and I played badminton in the MAC.  I went home after that, showered up, ate, then walked to school for my meeting. Why did I walk you ask? Because mother nature apparently had been holding her bladder all summer, she let it go with one fell swoop, which happened to make it feel like a hose was on you at all times. I didn’t want to wear my rain-gear, so I just grabbed my nifty new Google umbrella and walked to school. That took a lot longer than I planned (almost thirty-five minutes), and I was strangely exhausted from it. I got Dan to give me a ride home after the meeting, luckily. I worked a little more, then headed to Sarah’s place around 22:00 to go to Delta of Venus with her and some other internationals.

Friday brought something that sux0r3d. My ceiling sprung a leak around 06:00! I paged maintenance, he came out, took a look, then said he couldn’t do much without a roofer (understandable), so lucky for me it didnt leak for too much longer. I went to TGIF, we had pumpkin pie! I miss it, especially the somewhat (but not completely) dry crust, it’s so the best part. Later in the night I went to the Yosemite pictures party. That was actually really fun. The girls from Mexico City hosted it, and they made some authentic Mexican food, which was killer. Besides that, people were dancing, singing, and generally being merry. Monica somehow convinced me to dance, and of course I showed my true white-breadedness.

Saturday I went to the market with Meike. We threw a frisbee around for a while, then I went back to work. I later went and played football with my usual crowd at Russell field. After that, I went home, ate, then rented Kinky Boots with Rachel and watched that. We got done early, and Rachel had to study, so I headed home. I was bored, and had a massive sweet-tooth, so I went with Meike to Ben & Jerry’s, then we went back to my place and watched Stephen Lynch’s Live at the El Ray. It was awesome ; )

Sunday was fairly uneventful… NOT! Okay, sorry, but I saw BORAT! so I had to = p I also went to Dia de los Muertos at the I-House. That was fun, more authentic Mexican food! American Dad and Family Guy are finally back! And I also started watching Brothers and Sisters, ughh, I’m screwed now! I have so many shows to watch!
